2nd Grade Art
Welcome to 2nd Grade Art!!!

This year, students will create projects that will explore LINE, SHAPE, FORM, COLOR, PATTERN, and TEXTURE.  You child will also be introduced to how other subject areas connect with art, and prominent art, art styles, and artists from history.  All projects will allow your child's imagination to soar!


The following Common Core Learning Standards will be addressed through projects and learning in art:

- English Language Arts -
Reading Literature:  1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 11
Reading an Informational Text: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10
Reading Foundational Skills: 3, 4
Writing: 2, 5, 8, 11
Speaking and Listening: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Unit 1: Pattern
- Learning Goals - 
  • Review their knowledge of pattern and repetition.
  • Learn how to create their name in bubble letters.
  • Practice their understanding of pattern in art.
  • Be introduced to a variety of mediums - oil pastels, watercolor paint, markers, and crayons.
  • Learn about the rainforest by exploring the layers and animals that live in it.
  • Learn about weaving, warp, and weft.
  • Learn how to use overlap in an artwork.
  • Analyze their art and the art of their peers for positive things.
  • Create a haiku poem about the rainforest.

Unit 2: Landscape, Seascape, & Cityscape
- Learning Goals -
  • Review their knowledge of landscapes from what they learned about the Rainforest.
  • Identify the differences between a landscape, seascape, and cityscape.
  • Learn about the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 and what causes a tsunami.
  • Learn about the art of Katsushika Hokusai.
  • Be introduced to a variety of mediums - collage, acrylic painting, 3-D paper sculpture,  watercolor paint, markers, and crayons.
  • Create a 3-D piece (white caps) on a 2-D painting.
  • Learn how to use overlap in an artwork.
  • Analyze their art and the art of their peers for positive things.
  • Analyze the cityscape paintings of Charles Sheeler.
  • Learn how to combine a land and sea animal together and create a collage habitat.

Unit 3: Pop Art Self-Portraits
- Learning Goals -

 
  • To introduce the students to the genre of Pop Art and the artist Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.
  • To give students experience combining text and images.
  • To give students experience using expressive colors.To have students express themselves through an image.
  • To begin the drawing through observation of their self.
