5th Grade Art
Welcome to 5th Grade Art!!!

This year, students will create projects that will explore PERSPECTIVE, TEAMWORK, LANDSCAPE, LINE, SHAPE, FORM, COLOR, VALUE, RECYCLING, and TEXTURE. You child will also be introduced to how other subject areas connect with art, and prominent art, art styles, and artists from history. All projects will build on prior skills learned while allowing your child's imagination to soar!


The following Common Core Learning Standards will be addressed through projects and learning in art:

- English Language Arts -
Reading an Informational Text: 2, 4, 7, 10
Reading Foundational Skills: 3, 4
Writing: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11
Speaking and Listening: 1, 2, 3, 4

- Math -

Measurement and Data: 1, 2
Geometry: 3, 4

Unit 1: Fauvism and Henri Matisse
- Learning Goals -
  •  To explore observation skills through copying lines and colors in a square.
  • To understand placement of lines when enlarging a picture.
  • To work together to create a whole image.
  • To understand the use of a grid when enlarging an artwork through measurement.
  • To learn about Atmospheric Perspective and how it translates to a landscape drawing.
  • To understand the use of thumbnail sketches by creating them to exhaust ideas.
  • To learn about Fauvism and Henri Matisse by watching a PPT and reading a small article.
  • To create their own Fauvism landscape by using unusual colors to blend and create their landscape.
  • Analyze the art of famous Fauve artists - Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, and Maurice de Vlamick.
  • Analyze their art and the art of their peers for positive and improvement things.
  • To introduce students to blending and solid coloring with soft-lead colored pencils and oil pastels.

Unit 2: Atmospheric Perspective Eco-Art
- Learning Goals -
  • To learn about Atmospheric Perspective and how it translates to a landscape drawing.
  • To understand the use of thumbnail sketches by creating them to exhaust ideas.
  • To learn about Eco-Art and the use of recycled materials to create something beautiful.
  • To create their own Eco-Art landscape by using plastic shopping bags. 
  • Analyze their art and the art of their peers for positive and improvement things.

Unit 3: 1-Point Linear Perspective
- Learning Goals -
  • To learn about the history and use of 1-point perspective drawing and how it translates to a room drawing.
  • To understand the difference between 2-D drawing versus 3-D drawing.
  • To create their own perspective room drawing that uses 1-pt perspective in the room with furniture and Atmospheric Perspective outside the window.
  • To learn different techniques with watercolor pencils.
  • To practice blending and solid coloring with watercolor pencils.

    Unit 4: Still Life Drawing
    - Learning Goals -
  • To learn about the history and use of still life drawing.
  • To understand the difference between 2-D drawing versus 3-D drawing.
  • To create their own exploration of still life drawing with an apple.
  • To learn different techniques with drawing pencils, erasers, and colored pencils.
  • To practice shading and blending with pencil and colored pencil.
